I am Hanna-Riikka Heikkilä, a Tampere-based visual artist, illustrator, pattern designer, and art director. I thrive on color, light, and playfulness – those moments when the familiar is seen in a new light, when humor slips into the serious, and soft pastels are grounded by deep, muted tones. My creative work is a blend of sensitivity, playfulness, and strong emotional expression.

My creative expression is multifaceted, navigating the intersections of illustration, pattern design, and visual arts. I create paintings and drawings, design textile patterns, develop illustrations for companies and brands, and build visual identities as well as spatial and color plans. I work fluidly between unique fine art pieces and patterns tailored for print and textiles.

Alongside my artistic practice, I have spent years working at the intersection of creativity and commerce. This experience has given me a profound understanding of designing and managing cohesive visual entities. My background includes art direction as well as strategic, board, and executive team roles. My core expertise lies in translating creative thinking into functional and resonant visual solutions. I believe that creativity is an intrinsic value and the foundation of our culture – a vital force that enhances the well-being of individuals, organizations, and communities.

I work as a freelance illustrator and pattern designer, collaborating with various partners both in Finland and internationally. My client list includes Papu Design, Elovena, Lundia, Sidoste, Laine Magazine, Plywood Print, Paper Shop, and the Helsinki Parish Union.

Inspiring collaborations of all kinds are close to my heart. I work with people, visual aesthetics, culture, design, and creative thinking.

Please feel free to get in touch if you would like to work with me. 🤍

Hanna-Riikka Heikkilä is a visual artist who has also worked extensively with textile patterns and graphic design. In her fine art practice, she focuses on painting and drawing. Heikkilä’s breakthrough works in the early 2000s were paintings where a painted drawn line constructed the motif upon a surface of practically abstract colors and shapes.

While the core elements have remained consistent, her motifs have become increasingly abstract, and her brushwork more painterly. The use of outlines has diminished, while drawing has diverged from her paintings onto paper.

Nevertheless, her figurative elements retain a recognizable, spontaneous naivety that is also characteristic of her design work. Heikkilä is unafraid to challenge logic, play with humor, and offer visually seductive solutions. She paints in a way that integrates contemporary comics, illustration, and graphic design into her canvases without flattening them. She successfully avoids the pitfalls that often dull the edge of painting when one must consider adaptation for print. In her paintings, color is a physical element, and manipulating it has required strength.

Hanna-Riikka Heikkilä employs a distinct color palette where black and glowing, vibrant hues stand out alongside muted and matte tones. Her visual language possesses the power, sincerity, and edge of outsider art. Yet, the works are more than just images; they contain a sense of narrative and a tension created by her compositions.
